Hollywood Wax Museum
Hollywood, CA
By Susan M. Keenan
The Hollywood Wax Museum, located on 6767 Hollywood Boulevard, is part of the tourist area that has recently undergone some recent renovations. Open since 1965 under the guidance of Spoony Singh, the building sits on the site of a previous business that experienced a fire, killing an employee. Hence, a rumor began that the ghost of this employee haunts the museum.
The enjoyment of visitors begins even before they walk through the doors of the museum. Costumed employees sometimes attempt to lure patrons into the inner realms with their performances outside the front doors.
Inside the museum, more than two hundred life-sized wax figures, mainly of celebrities, await the gaze of admiring spectators. Popular movie stars from the past are featured including Sly Stallone, Clint Eastwood, Henry Winkler, Dean Martin, Lucille Ball, and Elizabeth Taylor. In fact, if you visit Grauman’s Chinese Theater nearby, you can see the footprints of some of these stars in the concrete sidewalk there.
Although large sets of figures are few and far between, they do exist. Popular sets include the entire cast of “Mash,” a TV show and “The Wizard of Oz,” a movie starring Judy Garland. Diorama displays throughout the museum also feature odd groupings of celebrities and cartoon characters. Other themed sections of the museum include Western, Horror, Pop Music, Religious, and United States Presidents. The Chamber of Horrors features scenes of torture and lots of popularized movie monsters.
Unfortunately, the museum has limited space inside. Therefore, displays are change frequently to allow for the inclusion of newer and more popular celebrities, resulting in the removal of old-time favorites who no longer hold the hearts of new museum visitors. A staircase holds a hodgepodge of wax figures what are seemingly unrelated in theme.

Specialty parties are occasionally hosted at the museum. Parties arranged by various celebrities head this list of events.
