Guiness World of Records

Hollywood, CA

By Susan M. Keenan

Located at 6764 Hollywood Boulevard, the Guinness World Records Museum is home to an amazing array of record-breaking trivia that focuses on science, history, and pop culture. Housed in the old Hollywood Theater that was built in 1938, the museum offers two complete floors of interesting world records about animals, sports, and more.
Although some of the displays are posters or written displays, many interesting variations exist including videos, 3-D displays, interactive touch screen, and talking holographs.

The Displays

The museum has special sections dedicated to Hollywood, the planets, structures and machines, the animal world, the world of entertainment, and the sports world. The touch screens allow museum guests to access additional information about each of the records on display at the museum.

Life-size wax mannequins of Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley, and others add a bit of lifelike realism to the exhibits. Michael is even wearing his black leather jacket. Elvis Presley gained his place in the museum with his record of being the most successful solo artist. Other notable wax figures include the tallest man, the smallest woman, the man who performed the shallowest dive, and the man who lost a large amount of weight.

Visitors to the museum can even get into the action of the place by stepping on a large scale to see how much they weigh. The scale is set up next to the world’s heaviest man, Robert Hughes. Typically, more than one visitor gets onto the scale to see how closely they can match the man’s weight of more than a thousand pounds.

One of the nice things about this museum is the need to constantly update exhibits as records are broken. It is possible to visit the theater more than once in your lifetime and see completely new displays as everything changes to keep up with the times.

Salute to Hollywood

A nine-seat theater provides videos detailing some of the record breakers that exist in Hollywood such as who holds the record for the most fan mail and the movie that won the most Oscars. Various Hollywood props from popular movies are scattered about the theater adding to the atmosphere.
