Pizzeria Mozza

By Martin Jauregui, Freelance Writer

Like Prometheus who stole fire from the almighty Zeus to bring it to the people, culinary legends Nancy Silverton, Mario Batali, and Joseph Bastianich have combined their skills and talents to bring Pizzeria Mozza to the people of Los Angeles. Combining their talents and experiences, Silverton, Batali, and Bastianich have come together to create a pizzeria that can more than hold its own with other L.A. pizza giants like Wolfgang Puck's and the California Pizza Kitchen.

The brainchild of Nancy Silverton, famed founder of the La Brea Bakery, Food Network star and famed chef Mario Batali, and Joseph Bastianich, one of the industry's foremost wine authorities, Pizzeria Mozza truly impresses, with both the quality and affordability of its food. Located on the corner of Highland Avenue and Melrose Avenue, Pizzeria Mozza has been delighting customers with possibly the best pizza in Los Angeles.

Although born of a distinguished pedigree, Pizzeria Mozza is truly a pizzeria for the people, a fact that is clearly reflected in its prices. The affetati misti, which is a plate of delicately sliced meats in the style of Tuscany, is the most expensive food item on the menu at $24. With antipasti that start at just $8, pizzas that range from $10 to $18, and salads that range from $8 to $15, Mozza's menu is surprisingly affordable considering the source, which is more than can be said for some of L.A.'s lesser pizza restaurants.

Mozza's dough, which is the product of Silverton's baking experience, is the true star of the show. Silverton's dough takes three days to make, but the end result, a chewy, puffy, and crispy crust, is well worth the wait. With more than fifteen pizzas to choose from, including a delicious fennel sausage pizza with panna, red onions, and scallions, as well as an absolutely mouthwatering Pizza alla Diavolo, which features shrimp, garlic, tomatoes, capers, and Fresno chilies, Pizzeria Mozza, there's a pie on the menu for all its patrons.

The popularity of Pizzeria Mozza makes reservations a must. In some cases, the restaurant recommends making reservations up to a month in advance. But don't let the wait scare you off, as lunchtime visitors are sometimes seated without reservations. The key to dining during lunch and avoiding the one-month wait though is to show up at about 11:30 am, since the restaurant opens at 12:00 pm. A seat is by no means guaranteed, but it is a chance worth taking for a place this good.

Pizzeria Mozza also offers close to 50 Italian winesall under $50, and all carefully chosen to complement the many items on the menu. A perfect place for all who make their way through Hollywood, from the clubber to the coporate executive, Pizzeria Mozza is a slice above the rest, no pun intended.
